averda in Lebanon
Sukleen was established by Maysarah Sukkar in 1994. This Beirut-based environmental solutions company was created to handle municipal waste collection and treatment. Sukomi soon followed in 1996, established to focus on sanitary landfill development and management.
In 2008, the company expanded into the UAE under the name of averda, internationally providing a range of integrated environmental solutions.
Sukleen manages city cleaning and waste collection in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, while its subsidiary, Sukomi, manages the sorting, recycling, treatment, composting, and sanitary disposal of waste. averda Lebanon also supervises large-scale technology and manufacturing facility, Leeds. Every day, Sukleen mobilizes more than 3,500 employees, and 190 vehicles to collect more than 2,700 tons of waste from residential, commercial, and industrial zones. With Sukomi, collected waste is manually and mechanically sorted into three distinct categories: industrial, organic, and non-reusable. Industrial recyclables can be reused to manufacture new products, while organic waste can be converted into compost and used as fertilizer. Non-reusable waste is compacted into bales weighing up to 15 tons and sent to landfill.
averda in the UAE
averda provides the UAE’s largest emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, with integrated waste management services for residential, commercial, institutional, public, private and industrial zones. averda was also awarded the prestigious contract by the Center of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi to fully manage the waste stream of the capital in areas such as Al Ghurm, Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach. averda also services Yas Island and nearby areas as well as the waste management for the world-famous Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix.
One of averda’s key goals is championing environmental awareness within the communities it serves through interactive initiatives designed to increase public awareness on waste avoidance as well as how to reduce, reuse and recycle. In partnership with Dubai Municipality, averda oversaw the segregation of waste for the ‘My City, My Environment’ initiative, providing two types of bins for each home in the Al Mizhar residential area; one for organic waste and the other for recyclables. averda was also responsible for educating the community residents about recycling, and encouraging them to use the bins through a door-to-door awareness campaign.
In line with averda’s goal to educate communities, averda partnered with GE in March 2013 to clean up a desert farmland in the UAE, collecting items such as cardboard, plastic and cans, which were further processed and recycled.
